✰ hello ✰
My name is Julia Malleck, and I am a writer and journalist from Brooklyn, New York. As a former staff writer at Quartz and Digital Frontier, I've written about topics like China's economic recovery from covid-19, labor rights under climate change, emerging technologies, and the evolving relationship between tech platforms and digital communities.

I have moved around quite a bit over the past 12 years, living for a time in Medford/Somerville, Massachusetts to attend Tufts University, then jumping over to London for a year to study at SOAS, University of London, next over to Suzhou, China for a summer, followed by a one-year stint in Washington, DC, then over to Beijing, China for two years, and once more back to London to complete my master's degree in public policy at LSE.

Following my Carmen Sandiego-ing (sans jewel thievery), I made the pivot to journalism, though I have always been a writer—it has been a through-line across the different jobs and places I have lived, and my way of making sense of the world and my experiences.
My favorite ways to write are either short form—punchy, easily digestible formats like newsletters—or long form, deep dives into topics, where I can explore how big ideas and historical forces shape how we live our online, technology-filled lives today.
In my free time, I write about oddities of the internet and online grifts for my Substack newsletter, Snake Oil, whose publishing schedule usually coincides with every other blood moon. I am currently based in Brooklyn.
